In 1916, to meet the military needs of the Royal Italian Navy, Officine Panerai created Radiomir, a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices. Today's Panerai Radiomir Black Seal retains many of the prototype’s features. The Navy's historical archives record that just ten prototypes were produced in 1936, and this newer model is another rare commodity, made from ceramic for a unique look.
