His so-called "crimes" varied, and his arrests took place in various different cities in the south. In this 1963 mugshot, he was arrested in Birmingham, Alabama for demonstrating without a permit. During his time in jail, he he wrote what is now known as his historic “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”
