Massive—in terms of fruit—and absolutely lacking in an ounce of oak, this 2014 “naked” Chardonnay proves that less is often so much more. The grapes were sourced from Knights Valley in the easternmost nook of Sonoma Valley. Fruit here is privy to long, sunny days and higher temperatures than elsewhere in Sonoma, which gives this Chard a Napa-like richness and viscosity.

Aromas of lemon zest and green apple lead to a palate of lean citrus and riper pear with a hint of buttery pastry and a fine core of minerality. While less lissome Chardonnays add weight and richness with oaky “seasoning,” this one accomplishes a similar results thanks to judicious winemaking, awesome source fruit—and perhaps most elusively—to simple, old-fashioned restraint.
