In 1926, Rolex created a revolutionary new type of wristwatch with a hermetically sealed case to protect the movement from dust and moisture. Cleverly named the Oyster, this watch crossed the English Channel the next year, keeping perfect time during the 10 hour swim. As if that wasn’t enough of a revolution for one timepiece, Rolex added the world’s first perpetual, self-winding movement to the watch in 1931. While nearly every modern automatic watch utilizes both of these innovations, there will always only be one Oyster Perpetual.
