Product Description
This small mask utilizes the angular Songye style. In the Songye language, a mask is known as a "kifwebe," a term that has been given to masks that represent spirits and are characterized by striations. Kifweve masks embody supernatural forces, and have been used to ward off disaster or threat. Made from a soft wood, the mask is supplemented by a woven costume and a long beard or raffia bast, and worn while dancing at various ceremonies. They are typically worn by men who act as police at the behest of a ruler, or to intimidate the enemy.
This mask in particular is a masculine mask, as it was carved with a central crest, and typically display aggressive and uncontrolled behavior with the aim of encouraging social conformity.
