Disk Of Phaistos
Product Description
Hellenic Art's pottery items are handmade in Greece in a small family workshop using natural quality materials, superb craftsmanship and attention to detail. They are licensed and modeled after museum pieces from all over the world, and bear the lead seal of authenticity.
The Disk Of Phaistos is a a disk of fired clay from the Minoan palace of Phaistos on the Greek island of Crete, that constitutes the most ancient piece of typography. The disk features 241 tokens, comprising 45 unique signs, which were apparently made by pressing hieroglyphic seals into a disc of soft clay in a clockwise sequence spiraling toward the disc's center. Many attempts have been made to decipher the code behind the disc's signs, but so far to no avail.
This piece is an exact replica of the original disk, which has been dated to about 1700 BC., and currently resides at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
