The original mask was an artifact discovered at Mycenae in 1876 by Heinrich Schliemann, crafted in gold, and was found over the face of a body located in a burial shaft. It is believed to belong to the Agamemnon, the legendary Mycenaean king who was the leader of the Greek Army at the Trojan War. It was dated to the 14th century BCE, and currently residing at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
