Fossilized Stingray
Product Description
This breathtaking Fossilized Stingray is bound to amaze — it is a snapshot of life on the bottom of a teeming 50 million year old lake. The stingray swam in ancient Eocene lakes in Wyoming, USA and was found in the famous Green River Formation, known to produce some of the most spectacular vertebrate fossils. It took hours of painstaking work by a professional fossil preparator to reveal the fine bones of this fossil from the stone. It is an incredibly alluring piece; the dark ray stands out beautifully from the light amber-colored stone slab. Amazingly, even the barbs of the stingray are intact! Rarely are stingrays found this complete.
Stingrays are cartilaginous fish related to sharks. They have barbed stingers on whip-like tails, which are used for self-defence. This particular specimen is a female ray, and comes ready to hang flush on a wall with a French cleat system (materials included).
