Sapphires are one of only four precious stones, along with rubies, emeralds and diamonds. Sapphires are a variety of the mineral corundum, which also includes rubies. The word "Sapphire" originated from the Greek "sapphirus", meaning “blue stone” but it is believed that this word was originally used to describe lapis lazuli. Sapphires are prized for their durability, lustre and rich blue colour, especially the rich royal blue from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and the Kashmir province in the Himalayas along the India/Pakistan border.
Another notable characteristic of sapphires is asterism, the optical phenomenon that creates the “star sapphire”, like the Star of Asia, a 33 carat star sapphire. Sapphires, in gemological terms, refers to only the blue variety of the corundum gems. All other colors aside from rubies and padparadscha are classified as "fancy sapphires" such as “yellow sapphire” or “green sapphire”. The rarest of these fancy colors is actually white or colorless. The color of sapphires come from iron (Fe2+) and titanium (Ti2+). The largest mounted sapphire is the Blackstar of Queensland, a 733 carat black sapphire from Australia
