Erik Bloodaxe
Product Description
Erik Haraldsson, nicknamed Erik Bloodaxe, was the heir to the Norwegian throne during the 10th century. During his early teen years, Erik learned the Viking craft of piracy and murder. King Harald appointed his sons to various districts to rule and intended for Erik to inherit the throne after his death. Bitter strife between the brothers ended with Erik murdering them. Erik’s rule became intolerable and he was driven out of the country. Erik Bloodaxe invaded Northumbria and ruled there for five years. During an invasion of Scotland, Erik was slain in battle, ending the reign of one of the bloodiest vikings rulers.
This handmade Damascus steel bearded axe was named after Erik Bloodaxe. Not only is the name fitting, but the bearded axe design has been in use as early as the 6th century AD and has been proven battle many times over. Often associated with Vikings and Scandinavian warriors, the beard, or “hook” of the axe is useful in pulling weapons out of the opponent's hand or pulling down a shield to make the defender vulnerable. The cutting edge of the bearded axe extends below the butt to provide a wider cutting surface while keeping the weight of the axe down. The user can also grip the handle directly behind the head for greater control and close quarters combat. 128 layers of Damascus steel give this bearded axe a unique look and feel. The included leather sheath, with belt loop, makes it easy to carry the axe on your next camping trip or Viking raid.
