Would you say these pillows are firm?

These pillows are not firm. They have plenty of stuffing, however, they are filled with a soft gel fiber which feels almost like down. They're full but not firm.

How do you wash and how would one keep pillows at cool temperatures on hot summer days?

These pillows can be washed in a regular cold wash and tumble dry low. The CoolMax technology which is built into the fabric shell is supposed to keep the body temperature cooler. These pillows do not have much of a cooling effect on the hand feel.

Do you suggest using a pillowcase with these pillows?

Yes, a cotton or Tencel pillowcase is preferred.
