1989 $50 First Man on the Moon Proof Silver Commemorative coin

Up for sale is a beautiful example of a 1989 $50 FIRST MEN ON THE MOON SILVER PROOF COMMEMORATIVE COIN. The Launch of Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969 was at 9:32 AM Eastern Standard Time. It landed on the Moon at 4:17 PM Eastern Standard Time. That was 54 years ago.

This $50 coin is much rarer and more collectible than the $5 coin that was issued at the same time.

America’s Apollo 11 mission achieved the goal which had driven the U.S. space program almost from the start. With the historic words “Houston, Tranquility Base here, the EAGLE has landed”. The small module carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. landed on the moon. When Armstrong stepped off the ladder he remarked “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. And with that mankind’s dream of standing on another world had been fulfilled!

The medal is comprised of 99.9% pure silver and contains 1 Troy Ounce of Silver. One troy ounce is equal to 1.097 standard ounces, making it around 10% heavier.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands released this commemorative $50 coin on the 20th anniversary of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's first steps on the moon.
