Being offered today is a VERY VERY RARE REVERSE CHANGEOVER PAIR OF $1 Dollar 1923 Large size series Silver Certificate Notes in the HIGH GRADE of Choice Uncirculated condition!

Reverse Changeover Pairs are an interesting phenomenon that occurred during the early years of printing currency. Changeover pairs are consecutive notes that transition to a different signature combination. On this pair, the first signature is Woods - White and the consecutive note signature is Speelman - White.

What is a “Reverse Changeover”? This happens when the first note in the combination is printed later in the series, and the second note is printed earlier in the series. The signatures on the first note of Woods – White and is identified by Friedberg (FR) numbering system as # 238. The signatures on the second note of Speelman – White and is identified by Friedberg (FR) numbering system as # 237.

So, the Woods – White serial number: X79151392D (FR. # 238) was printed before the Speelman – White serial number: X79151393D (FR. # 237).

This process occurred because the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) workers kept using old plates due to high engraving costs. Some signatures were already engraved into the plates even long after a signer had left their office, or the plates would be used until they wore out or were retired.

They would group together various face and back plates on the same press. After the first and second printing (where the differences of series would occur) the sheets would be cut and compiled into one stack. All that was left was the third printing which contained the serial numbers. The stack of partially completed notes would be numbered in sequence.
