Yes, it can definitely be used in "Gentle" mode for a typical 7-8 hours of sleep at night. Depending on your comfort you could use it in therapeutic mode at level 1 at the beginning for a max of 15/20 minutes. If that's comfortable for you and you don't experience any soreness you can use it for longer sessions. In the beginning, however, we highly recommend you start in Gentle mode for sleeping throughout the night.

Is this good for traveling on a plane?

Yes! Most definitely. Just make sure you are able to recline the seat a bit for optimal results.
