Does it require an amplifier or receiver for connecting?

Yes, you can connect to the x30 speakers via Bluetooth or direct connect it with an RCA cable. The amplifier for both speakers are in the back of one of them and plug it into a home outlet. The power on the amplifier is 30W.

Does it operate by wire(s) plugging into a wall AC outlet?

Yes, the speaker with the amplifier plugs into a wall outlet. You then connect the 2 speakers with Cat5 cable. All cables are included in the box.
