Are the blades made as the traditional by stacking and welding in a forge? If so, why is there no pattern where the edge is ground?

The Damascus Subhilt Bowie is forged welded using multiple layers of low and high carbon contrast; it is the traditional forged Damascus blade. The ground edge is polished for a sharp blade. "PATTERN WELDED" refers to etching applied afterward; more information about pattern welding are available here.
