The Rapier is a loose term for a type of slender, sharply pointed sword optimized to be a thrusting weapon, but that can often be used for cutting or slashing. This weapon was mainly used in combat in Early Modern Europe during from the 16th and 17th centuries. It subsequently became the weapon of choice for academic fencing, elevating sword fighting to the level of art. Rapiers have also graced the silver screen in the hands of iconic characters such as Zoro and Inigo Montoya.
