The Gladius was the primary sword of Ancient Roman foot soldiers. Adopted around the third century B.C.E. during their conquest of Hispania, these swords were known in Latin as the "gladius hispaniensis," or Hispanic Sword. Roman legionnaires led with their large shields from the incredibly disciplined phalanx formation, and dispatched with ruthless efficiency using the Gladius.
