Genuine Douvilleiceras Ammonite Fossil from the Upper Cretaceous of Madagascar. This genus of ammonites are also called "Tractor Ammonites", due to their distinctively bumpy surface and pronounced ridges making them resemble a tractor tire. This particular specimen has a uniquly dark color - as opposed to the natural or white coloring usually found in these types of Ammonites. The fossilized shells of Ammonites are typically spiral-shaped, very much like that of the Nautilus. However, around 170 million years ago, these squid-like creatures began to build their shells in exotic, highly variable shapes.
