Product Description

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely ring formed from 96% gold (equivalent to 22K+ gold) with a thin shank, gradually expanding shoulders, and a circular bezel. Within the bezel is a discoid intaglio carved from mottled blue-green stone with a standing eagle etched into the surface. The eagle was a prominent animal in ancient Rome known as a symbol of pride and victory in the eyes of the legions. Known as "aquila" in Latin, the eagle was a representation of honor, victory, and cohesiveness within a legion.

Condition: Wearable on a petite finger or necklace strand due to diminutive size of opening. Slight bending to overall form of shank, with nicks and encrustations to etched intaglio, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout, and eagle still visible on intaglio.
