Lot of 2 Roman Bronze Chariot Rein Guides
Product Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A pair of matching cast-bronze chariot fittings, each with a six-sided terminal on either horizontal side, two loops for threading reins, and one longer, ovoid loop with diagonal struts for attachment. Roman chariots were not used for warfare, but instead in circuses and in triumphal processions. As a result, elaborate attachments like this became de rigeur, lending a unique look to each chariot.
Condition: One is intact; one has an ancient loss of one of the diagonal struts. Both have nicely preserved forms with pretty pale green patinas.
