Early 20th C. Indonesian Iron, Brass & Wood Kris
Product Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely personal ceremonial sword known as a kris (keris) with a hand-carved wooden handle resting above a hemispherical brass spacer cap. The forged-iron blade has a straight profile, a projecting hand guard, and sharpened edges which taper to a rounded point. The sheath is composed of two carved wooden components - the volute-adorned guard protector and the narrow blade house - and features a myriad of attractive incised foliate motifs incised on the surface.
Condition: Both sheath components reattached, and repair to lower tip of blade house, with light adhesive residue along break lines. Small hole in lower blade house, chipping and light oxidation to blade and hand guard, with light encrustations within some recessed areas. Fine patina throughout.
