Early 20th C. African Guro Painted Wood Face Mask
Product Description
West Africa, Ivory Coast, Guro peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An interesting hand-carved wooden mask depicting an abstract anthropomorphic head on the front. The frontal face has a slender form with a narrow nose, protruding nubbin eyes, thin lips surrounding two rows of integral teeth, concentric striations across the forehead, and a pair of backswept horns. The face is attached to a hemispherical wooden backing with several peripheral perforations for attaching a larger costume, and the only sight hole is through the back of the mouth. The face is colored with smooth, dark-brown pigment, and nice patina has formed across the backing. A fine example from the Guro!
Condition: Minor abrasions to mask, backing, and some raised areas, with fading to areas of original pigmentation, and one small chip to top of backing, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice patina throughout.
