Byzantine Pottery Bowl w/ Glazed Decoration - Sea Find
Product Description
Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 13th century CE. A pretty ceramic bowl made for domestic use; it has a decorated interior with an ornate glazed motif of diamonds and circles around a central triangle, each filled with spirals and swirls, against a buff pale red background.
Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware for domestic use based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals. These bowls were made and exported throughout the Empire, and have been found in numerous shipwrecks - for example, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, has as part of its collection a very similar piece that was found in the Aegean.
Condition: Light wear on surface commensurate with age including some small chips from the rim, otherwise in excellent condition with deposits on surface, mainly around the rim, indicative of burial at sea. Excellent craquelure on the glazed decoration.
