Rare Early 20th C. Dayak Child's Sword & Sheath
Product Description
Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A Dayak "Mandau" sword with a carved stag horn handle and the remains of a blonde horse hair plume rising from the pommel. The handle is carved in the form of a fierce fish with its wide mouth open, its body decorated with incised lines. The grip is bound with woven rattan thread and the steel blade has a single sharpened edge that ends in a blunt, squared-off point. A wooden and rattan sheath protects the sword. The mandau is the traditional weapon of the Dayak, associated with the headhunting ceremony.
Sheath is in two pieces, but still protects the blade. Blade and handle have dark patina from age and handling.
