Early 20th C. Samoan Wooden War Club
Product Description
Oceania, Samoan Islands, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden war club with a stocky cylindrical handle boasting carinated points just above the crested hand guard, and an elongated diamond-form blade with a central midrib and a pointed tip. The body, guard, and handle are decorated with intricately-incised triangular and linear details which compose complex geometric motifs as well as a pair of abstract anthropomorphic figures on each side of the blade. The incised imagery is further accentuated with inlaid chalky-white material, and the entire club is covered in lustrous coffee-hued patina.
Small chips to small areas of handle and blade as well as inlaid chalky-white material, with a few stable hairline fissures, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout. Old inventory label on verso.
