Early 20th C. Indonesian Wood, Iron & Brass Kris
Product Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine example of a kris (keris), a type of ceremonial sword. The wooden handle is carved from coffee-hued hardwood and displays a pair of abstract anthropomorphic masks along the interior curve, and a discoid brass separation disc rests between the handle and blade. The iron blade has a relatively straight profile with integral bands of lighter material along the shoulder. The wooden sheath consists of a shoulder protector and a blade housing made from two separate pieces of wood.
Restoration to most of blade save for shoulder where lighter material is present. Very light abrasions to handle and sheath, with small nicks to blade. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice patina to wooden components.
