19th C. Australian Aboriginal Wood Throwing Stick
Product Description
Oceania, Western Australia, Aboriginal peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful throwing stick, hand-carved from finely grained wood, meant for hunting rather than for display. The weapon has a slight curve to the body, a smooth verso, and a slightly convex obverse surface. The front displays a myriad of linear, avian, and anthropomorphic motifs in the negative spaces created by the meticulously stippled design, and fabulous patina envelops the entire composition.
Minor abrasions to body and ends, with light softening to some stippled motifs, and a couple of stable fissures, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
