Fine Ancient Greek Hydria // 4th Century BC
Product Description
A wonderful ancient Greek red-figure hydria from Apulia, dating from the 4th century BC— the time of Alexander the Great! Finely-decorated in red-figure style, depicting a robed male figure standing with a torch and staff standing before a woman who is seated on a beautiful chair. She is dressed in a chiton and himation and holds a mirror in her right hand and rests her left arm at her side. The figures are beautifully rendered in fine style, a Maeander pattern below them, a floral sprig in field behind and a laurel-band around the front half of the neck. The rim is wide with ridged design, a band with vertical tongues around the edges.
