Ancient Greek. Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, 4th century BC. Time of Alexander the Great! A wonderful Apulian black glazed pelike. Elegantly-formed with rounded body, constricted neck, and wide rim, two graceful handles at the sides. The body is heavily decorated with designs in red, white and yellow paint including a blonde-haired woman’s head facing left on one side, various linear, wave-like, and dotted horizontal and vertical designs around. Intact, with only minor chipping, and heavy earthen and mineral deposits. H: 8.125”, W: 5”.
