Product Description

Ancient Islamic, Seljuqs (Seljuks) of Rum. Excellent silver Dirham struck under Kayka’us II ('Izz al-Din), AH 643-647 (1246-1262 AD).

The son of Kaykhusraw II and Prodoulia, his Greek mother was the daughter of a Greek priest. He remained close with the Greeks of Nicaea throughout his reign and his life. Academic Rustam Shukurov said of Kaykaus II that he ”had dual Christian and Muslim identity, an identity which was further complicated by dual Turkic/Persian and Greek ethnic identity".

This coin was struck circa AH 647 (1249 AD), citing caliph al-Musta’sim. Slabbed and certified by NGC. An absolutely gorgeous coin.
