Ancient Egyptian Ceramic Frog Lamp
Product Description
Ancient Egypt. Roman period, c. 2nd Century AD. This ceramic oil lamp features stylized frog motifs on the body and long stout. The lamp also features a reddish tone, deep-cut detail, lighten earthen and mineral deposits.
Frogs were sacred to the Ancient Egyptians. When the frogs came, this meant that the Nile was flooding and soon the crops would be irrigated. A season without frogs meant agricultural devastation, so lighting these lamps was thought to be an offering to the frogs, bringing upon a good and bountiful harvest.
