Product Description

This coin comes from the wreck of the Joanna, which sunk in 1682 off South Africa. It only has light surface corrosion on most of the shield and cross and toned throughout.

Joanna was a British East India vessel on her way to India in 1682. She strayed from her convoy in a storm and was dashed upon a reef off of the southern tip of South Africa on June 8, 1682. Eventually the survivors made their way to the Dutch colony of Cape Town and organized a salvage party. Her initial cargo consisted of 70 chests of gold and silver coins, of which only a small portion was able to be salvaged at the time. The wreck was rediscovered in 1982, exactly 300 years after her sinking. Since then only a handful of coins have entered the collector market making these highly desirable and sought-after shipwreck treasure.
