Athens, Attica, Ancient Greece, c. 440-404 BCE. Silver “Old Style” tetradrachm. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with laurel leaves and vine scroll / Owl standing right, head facing; above and behind, olive sprig and crescent; ΑΘΕ, all within incuse square. Ancient bankers' countermarks and test cuts made by ancient merchants while in circulation! Good Fine.
These coins funded the building of the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens, as well as funding the Peloponnesian War (431 - 404 BC) between Athens and Sparta.
