Product Description

Ancient Egypt, Roman period, c. 2nd Century AD. An excellent and quite large ceramic “frog” oil lamp. A ceramic oil lamp, with stylized frog motif on body and long spout. Nice brick-red tone, deep-cut detail, light earthen and mineral deposits. Measures 4" x 3.75” and heavy! The spout still heavily charred from use in antiquity!

*** Frogs were sacred to the Ancient Egyptians… when the frogs came this meant that the Nile was flooding and soon the crops would be irrigated. A season without frogs meant agricultural devastation, so lighting these lamps was thought to be an offering to the frogs, bringing upon a good and bountiful harvest.
