Medieval Hungary, silver denar of Ferdinand I, 1526-1564 AD. Madonna (Virgin Mary) seated, holding baby Jesus, PATRONA VNGARIE around / Coat-of-arms with cross, date above. VF, good silver, well struck, bright patina, nice detail.
"Maddonnenmunzen" - the most revered silver coins of their time. The coin was struck in commemoration the birth of Christ. They were issued to display piety, faith and defiance during the continuous struggle against the Ottoman Turks.
