Spanish “Pirate” Cob // Dated 1655
Product Description
Spanish copper cob. "Pirate Money" of Philip IV (1621-1665 AD). Copper 8-Maravedis "cob" struck c. 1625 depicting a lion and castle. Heavily counterstamped with "1655”, “BAS” and "8" when revalued in 1655. ref: Cayon 5305 for type. Deep olive-green patina with earthen highlights. Found at the site of a late Medieval harbor in Spain where pirates were known to have gathered to plunder Spanish galleons for their riches. Ex Cordoba, Spain collection. Encapsulated and certified by NGC. An excellent specimen! Archival slab measures 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”.
