Product Description

Middle Kingdom Egypt, Dynasty XII c. 1991-1786 BC. A phenomenal carved and polished alabaster vessel with its original lid, used to store kohl in ancient times. Kohl was an important cosmetic to the ancient Egyptians, and was used as a type of eye-liner which repelled insects and reduced glare from the blazing desert sun. It was applied with a small bronze, stone, or wood applicator and used sparingly as it was a very valuable material of the time. The top is drilled with a 7/8” hole, and the interior is still caked with ancient earthen deposits, likely with traces of kohl still buried within.
