The Healing Center of the Ancient World. Pergamon, Mysia, Ancient Greece, c. 190-133 BC. Large silver cistophoric tetradrachm, struck c. 166-67 BC. Cista mystica with half-open lid, from which a serpent issues, all within ivy wreath. Two coiled serpents with heads erect, between them a bow case, ornamented with an aplustre, containing a strung bow, in field to right a serpent-entwined staff of Aesklepius; monogram to left, AP monogram above. Breathtaking!
