Holy Land Terracotta Bird Rattle // 6th century AD
Product Description
A lovely child’s rattle from the Holy Land, dating to the late Roman to early Byzantine period, circa 6th century AD. This large rattle is formed depicting a bird in profile, with deeply-incised details, small crest and pong, pointed tail feathers. A small hole at its beak, and large hole in its back allow the ceramic or seed rattle-balls that were fired within it to still emanate a sound when shaken. In an excellent state of preservation with brick-red color and light earthen and mineral deposits. Measures 4 1/4” x 3 1/2”. From the collection of David Hendin (Author of “Guide to Biblical Coins”) in the 1990’s.
