One of the First Times Jesus Christ was depicted on a coin! Byzantine Empire. Reign of John I, 969 - 976 AD. Byzantine Empire. Reign of Basil II and Constantine VIII, c. 989-1035 AD. Very large Class A2 bronze follis. The front depicts the bust of Christ facing, holding book of Gospels, +EMMANOVHA IX-XC around / The back reads IҺSЧS/ XRISTЧS/ ЬASILЄЧ/ ЬASILЄ ("Jesus Christ King of Kings") in four lines, ornament above and below. Reference: Sear SB 1812 for type. Coin diameter 32mm (1 1/4 inches!) Dark olive-green patina, nice detail. Encapsulated and certified Choice Very Fine by NGC! Archival slab measures 3.125" x 2.125" x 0.375”.
