Product Description

Jerusalem, circa "Year Zero", Time of Christ. An excellent "Herodian" terracotta oil lamp, c. 4 BC to 4 AD. Made with rounded, flat body and long spout with squared nozzle. Measures 3 5/8” long, and nicely preserved, with light Holy Land earthen deposits.

The "Light Bulb of the Ancient World", one of these would have been in every household throughout Judaea during the time of Christ. It is highly likely that there were at least a few present during the Last Supper. This was also the type of lamp that would have been used to light the inside of Jesus' tomb after His crucifixion. A highly sought-after and studied type, the literary reference for these wonderful, yet simple oil lamps is Bussiere - Rivel #309 for type.
