Product Description
Luristan, ancient Persia, c. 1200-700 BC. A fantastic and very large Persian bronze battle axe head. With a short cylindrical shaft hole with a collar, a flattened top with a vertical crescent-shaped blade with sides that broaden out towards the cutting edge and a smaller horizontal blade to the back. The surfaces with a beautiful green patina. An axe such as this one would have been an important symbol of rank, and have served a purpose in warfare, but also in religious contexts as axes were common votive offerings in shrines.
