Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet ornamented with laurel leaves and vine scroll / Owl standing right, head facing; above and behind, olive sprig and crescent; ΑΘΕ, all within incuse square. Ancient bankers' countermarks and test cuts made by ancient merchants while in circulation! Good Fine. 22mm, 15.61 g. ref: HGC 4, 1597, SNG Copenhagen 31-40, Kroll 8 for type. Ex CNG. ** These coins funded the building of the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens, as well as funding the Peloponnesian War (431 - 404 BCE) between Athens and Sparta.
