Product Description

Pontius Pilate, 26-36 AD. Bronze lepton, struck 30-31 AD. Lituus, TIBEPIOY KAICAPOC / Date in wreath: LIZ (Year 17=30-31 AD). Olive-green patina, light earthen deposits.

Pontius Pilate is mentioned in all four Christian Gospels. In Mark, he believes Jesus to be innocent of the charge of plotting against Rome, and believes the Jewish Sanhedrin to be responsible for his death. Matthew says that Pilate "washed his hands" of his sentencing of Jesus but still sends him to his execution. In the Gospel of Luke, Pontius Pilate believes that Christ did conspire against Rome, but mentions that King Herod finds Jesus' actions harmless. John tells the story that Jesus never even claims to be the Son of God (or the Messiah) to Pontius Pilate or any other Jewish officials.
