Byzantine Empire, c. 8th-11th century AD. Very large bronze reliquary cross (half), set in a stunning custom .925 silver pendant and 18-inch Italian silver chain. Depicts the Virgin Mary with arms upraised "orans", wearing long robes, Greek “MHTRH” (“Mother”) above, small cross above her head, leaf designs and stars to sides. Deep olive-green patina, excellent detail! An “Encolpion” or reliquary cross was worn as a statement of faith... a two-pieced cross that once held within it a relic of a saint or martyr.
