Product Description
Ancient Greece, Olbia, Sarmatia, c. 5th century BC. A small hoard of 12 Olbian dolphin money. Olbia, on the shores of the Black Sea is now part of Ukraine. The ancient Olbians worshipped Delphinus, the sacred, playful fish-god of the sea. Before the introduction of struck circular coins, their cast-bronze coinage was crafted in the shape of a leaping dolphin. Each is cast in the shape of a leaping dolphin, and measure between 17 and 31mm, with glossy deep olive-green to black patina.
