Ancient Indo-Sasanian Coin // 1022 - 1135 AD // Random
Product Description
Ancient Indo-Sasanian billon coin, struck between 1022 and 1135 AD. Called “Gadhaiya Paisa” these were struck in a debased silver-base metal alloy called “billon” and depict the bust of the king on the obverse and a fire altar on the reverse. The depictions are heavily stylized and abstract, as the dies for these coins were created in India by those who fled the Sassanian Islamic expansion, and were based on Sassanian Persian coins of the time. Over time the original meanings of the depictions became lost by the engravers and the coins took on an extremely stylized form. The stories we know today of Sinbad the Sailor are based on the sea voyages of this period that Arabic peoples embarked upon across the Indian Ocean to ports such as Ceylon, and these are the same coins that those sailors would have come across on their journeys. They quickly became the main trade coins of medieval India. Average coin diameter 14mm, weight 4.75 to 5.5 grams. Nice surfaces, light earthen deposits. Ex Stephen Album, expert and author of the definitive books on Islamic and Indian coins.** Every coin is unique but similar in condition and appearance. The one you will receive might be slightly different and not necessarily the same as pictured.
