Spanish Copper “Pirate” Cob // Dated 1628
Product Description
Spanish copper reale. "Pirate Money" of Philip IV (1621-1665 AD). Copper 8-Maravedis "cob" struck originally depicting a lion and castle. Counter-stamped with "1628” and "VIII" when revalued in 1628. ref: Cayon 5305v for type. Coin diameter 23mm (15/16”). Good detail, olive-green patina, earthen deposits. Found at the site of a late Medieval harbor in Spain where pirates were known to have gathered to plunder Spanish galleons for their riches.
