Rare Roman Iron Key // 1st-3rd Century AD
Product Description
Rare iron key, Ancient Rome, c. 1st-3rd Century AD. With four teeth with additional four grooves; professionally conserved to inhibit further rusting/oxidation. Rare in this condition, the end twisted in antiquity!
Likely an ancient “janitor’s” key. Back in ancient times, Romans wealthy enough to own slaves had one who was stationed just inside the door that led into their home. He was the one person who not only held the key but was also responsible to keep out undesirables. This slave was called the "janitor." Why janitor? Because Janus was the Roman god of beginnings and ends… doors and passageways.
